2024 Senior Coaching TEAM
RHYS CAPPELLO - MEN'S FQPL Head COACH
Mackay Wanderers FC are delighted to announce that Rhys Cappello has come on board for the 2024 season as FQPL Head Men’s Coach.
Cappello has an extensive background as a coach and is well respected and held in high esteem by players. Rhys’s experience encompasses time spent coaching up and down the east coast, in Newcastle, Sydney, Cairns, Townsville and Rockhampton competitively with Magpies Crusaders United (MCU). Capello says some coaching highlights during this time were two seasons as MCU Men’s Assistant coach in 2020/2021; and as MCU Youth Coach and being 2020 Championship winners and 2021 Premiership winners.
With the relegation of Magpies Crusaders United at the end of the 2021 season and the consequential folding of MCU, Cappello lent his talent and experience to coaching Women’s Football at Country United (CUFC). Proving to have somewhat of a Midas touch when it comes to competitive successes, with Cappello notably coaching the CUFC Premier Women's side in the local league and having a successful KAPPA Cup run in 2022, unfortunately eventually going down to a class side from Gladstone, Clinton FC.
After a two and a half year stint with the CUFC women, in 2024 Cappello is set to grow his portfolio as Head Coach of the FQPL Men at Wanderers. MWFC believe that he has the perfect platform to inspire, guide and support players as a team to success. Despite his young age, Rhys is dedicated to providing players with high quality coaching, and his vast array of coach education is backed by a wealth of experience and his impressive portfolio speaks for itself.
Mackay Wanderers' continued drive to provide outstanding experiences for more seasoned players, as well as a commitment to developing and inspiring the younger players believes that Cappello is a good fit for the team and club. As part of his role Rhys is keen to share his invaluable knowledge amongst the Competitive Senior & Junior coaching groups.
He encourages any players who want to be competitive and are committed to come down and try a session, he promises you won’t be disappointed!
Training days are 6pm Tuesday and Thursday each week.

JUSTIN WALDON - WOMEN'S FQPL HEAD COACH
Mackay Wanderers FC are once again pleased to welcome back Justin Waldon again as the Women's FQPL Head Coach for season 2024.
Waldon, re-signs after a successful 2022 season which the team won the Premiership and made it all the way to the Grand Final. Justin was keen to build on that success, and as such 2023 saw the ladies leap into the FQPL Competition. The 2023 was a season to build and solidify the squad so that going forward both a competitive FQPL Women's and an U23 Women's team could be fielded.
Waldon's ambitions are to continue to progress and keep the women in the top four. As part of this vision and to enable all player's abilities to be catered for and developed, Adrian Eales comes on board as the Women's U23 coach to support in this role.
With both coaches committed to player development and team success the growth in the women's player numbers which we have previously seen along with the succession of Junior girls coming through the ranks to join the FQPL squad in 2024 women's football at Mackay Wanderers FC is looking very exciting for now and for the future.
“There are some quality women amongst the playing group already and with the addition of a few key players I see no reason why we can’t compete with the best of them.”
When asked why he was happy to take the role on again, it was clear Waldon had unfinished business.
“I want the club to achieve success. It was heartbreaking to lose the Grand Final in 2022 after we’d shown our class all season. There’s something special about the group of girls we have. They’ll move mountains to get another crack at it this coming season.”
Mackay Wanderers are excited to have Justin on board again and wish him all the best for Season 2024.
Ladies looking to join the club are invited to come down on training days (6:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays) or contact the club directly.
